Lithium-ion Battery Safety.

The risks of lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes and e-scooters

What you need to know

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming a popular and eco-friendly choice of transport. They offer a convenient way to get around, help improve your health and reduce your carbon footprint. However, there are potential risks involved, especially related to the lithium-ion batteries used to power them. These batteries, if not handled properly, can cause serious fires.

What are e-bikes and e-scooters?

  • E-bikes, also called e-cycles or Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs), are powered by a battery and offer a greener alternative to traditional bikes. They help people cycle longer distances with less effort.

  • E-scooters are becoming more common too. However, it is important to note that e-scooters are illegal to use on public roads, cycle lanes, and pavements (except in trial areas with specific rental programmes).

Fire risks linked to lithium-ion batteries

While e-bikes and e-scooters are generally safe when used correctly, the lithium-ion batteries that power them can pose serious fire risks. This is especially true when:

  • The battery is damaged

  • Poor-quality batteries are used

  • Incorrect chargers or parts are used

  • The battery is of low quality or defective

What’s causing the fires?

Emerging evidence shows that many of the fires are linked to the following causes:

  • Conversion kits: Converting regular bikes into e-bikes using aftermarket kits can be risky if not done properly.

  • Incompatible parts: Using the wrong battery or charger that isn't suitable for your e-bike or e-scooter increases the risk of fire.

  • Defective or poor-quality products: Some batteries, chargers, and entire e-bike or e-scooter units are of low quality and more prone to malfunctioning.

How to stay safe

  • Only buy from trusted sources: Make sure you purchase e-bikes, e-scooters, and batteries from reputable sellers who offer high-quality, safety-tested products.

  • Avoid conversion kits: Converting your regular bike into an e-bike with a DIY kit can be dangerous, especially if it involves incompatible parts or poor-quality batteries.

  • Check for safety labels: Look for products that have been certified by safety organisations.

  • Use the correct battery and charger: Always use the recommended battery and charger that came with your e-bike or e-scooter and never substitute with an incompatible one.

  • Regularly inspect your equipment: Check your e-bike or e-scooter for signs of wear and tear, especially around the battery and charging areas.

  • Store your battery properly: Never leave your battery on charge overnight or in extreme temperatures, and store it in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Protect yourself and others

As the popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters grows, it’s important to stay informed about the potential fire risks. By following safety guidelines and purchasing quality products, you can help reduce the risk of a fire and enjoy these modern transport options safely.
